Bus pass fee jumps

PROVIDENCE – People with disabilities and seniors who want to participate in the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority’s (RIPTA) bus card program now have to pay a fee of $17.50, which is an increase of $3.75 effective as of Jan. 1.
The fee will increase $3.75 each calendar year until January 2013, when the cost will be and remain at $25, according to RIPTA.
The bus cards are now valid for five years from the original issue date. The cost to replace cards is increasing, too, going from $10 the first time to $15 the second time and to $20 the third time. For information on how to qualify for RIPTA’s bus pass program, call (401) 784-9500, extension 604, or go online to ripta.com.
