REHOBOTH – It’s the Monday before Valentine’s Day, and more than 50 people are having lunch at “Gert’s Café.” The “proprietor,” 89-year-old Gertrude Messier, is wearing a red cowboy hat, red heart-shaped earrings, a long red blouse and red cowboy boots.

When I was in college, a visit home to see my mother always ended the same way. She would say, “You got any money in your pocket?”
Of course I didn’t; I was in college. Then she would say, “Don’t be afraid to ask,” and go get $10 or $20 from her wallet.

Sagar-Blanchard team pledge to unite town


SEEKONK – Gary S. Sagar and Robert Blanchard are team players, hoping to score victories in this year’s selectmen’s race.   
Sagar, 57, of 30 Elaine Ave., and Blanchard, 76, of 85 Sykes Road, promise in their vision statement “to help restore credibility to the highest elected board in town government,” and they pledge “to work together with other boards and committees to establish a ‘team’ in town government.”
