Westerly center, PACE present strategies for caring for Alzheimer’s victims

WESTERLY – The challenges of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease is the topic of a workshop being held tonight (April 17) by the Adult Day Center of Westerly and the Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE).

Becoming an Alzheimer’s Whisperer will be led by Dr. Verna Benner Carson and Katharine Vanderhorst. It is from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Westerly Library, 44 Broad St. The seminar is being offered this one time for free to local residents and professionals responsible for caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Carson will offer gentle and loving strategies for managing aggression, wandering, eating difficulties and other dementia related behaviors. For more information and to register for the seminar, call (401) 596-1336. Registration is strongly recommended because seating is limited.

Dr. Carson is a board certified advanced practice psychiatric mental health nurse. She is one of the originators of psychiatric home care and changed national Medicare policy so that patients could be referred for such care without seeing a psychiatrist. Vanderhorst is a psychiatric nurse with years of clinical experience in behavioral health and Alzheimer’s care, according to a spokesperson for the Adult Day Center.
