Play about serious issue promises many laughs

PAWTUCKET -- Performances of Rhode Islander Tom Griffin's funny and heart-warming play “The Boys Next Door” will conclude the Community Players’ 91st season.
The audience will meet Arnold Wiggins, a basically nervous person. He lives with Lucien P. Smith, who fancies very big books; and Norman Bulansky, who works in a doughnut shop; and Barry Klemper, who has schizophrenia and has convinced himself that he is a golf pro. They share an apartment for men with developmental disabilities supervised by Jack, their caseworker, who, despite his genuine concern for his clients, is on the verge of total burnout, according to Erika Koch, publicity director for the community theater group.
Originally produced off-Broadway in 1986, the play was also made into an Emmy-nominated Hallmark Hall of Fame movie in 1996. The often hilarious yet touching look at life inside a group home is a must-see, according Koch.
“The Boys Next Door” will be presented July 20 to 22 and 27 to 29 in the auditorium of Jenks Junior High School, which is on Division Street across from McCoy Stadium. Jenks is air conditioned, and there is plenty of free parking. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. and on Sundays.
Tickets, which can be reserved at www.thecommunityplayers.org or by calling (401) 726-6860, are $15 for adults and $12 for students through high school.
