Fund provides tax assistance

SEEKONK – The town’s Elderly and Disabled Taxation Aid Fund has money available to assist elderly and/or disabled residents to defray the cost of property taxes. The fund consists of donations from residents, businesses and community and church groups.
According to a release from the office of  town Treasurer-Collector Christine N. DeFontes, to qualify for assistance, residents must:
  • Be at least 60 years of age by July 1 or disabled.
  • Not exceed an annual combined household income of $45,390.
  • Have owned and occupied the property as a primary domicile for at least five years prior to the July 1.
Meeting the income criteria does not automatically guarantee an award. In addition to household income, other assets as well as debt and expenses will be taken into consideration. A copy of the most recent federal income tax return for each member of a household is required to be submitted with the application.
Applications and guidelines are available at the tax assessor’s office in Town Hall, 100 Peck St., and the Department of Human Services, 320 Pleasant St. Applications must be returned to the assessor’s office no later than Oct. 1. Final award decisions will be made by the Elderly and Disabled Taxation Aid Fund Committee no later than Dec. 31 and will be applied to Feb. 1 and/or May 1 taxes.
According to the release, fund donations, which are tax deductible, are needed. Checks should be payable to the Town of Seekonk Taxation Aid Fund and mailed to the tax collector’s office.
