Coalition: Restore funding to vital grants

Since 2007, Rhode Island legislators have cut community grants for senior services by $1.8 million, or 68 percent. That was done even though the state’s population of senior citizens increased during that period. During the 2012 General Assembly session, the Senior Agenda Coalition led a campaign that prevented an additional $248,000 cut to those grants proposed by the governor.

Group against proposal requiring granny cams

We are all familiar with surveillance devices that parents set up in homes to ensure their children are being properly cared for by the nanny or babysitter. Those devices are called nanny cams.  Unfortunately, the trend seems to be shifting to granny cams. Supporters of placing granny cams in long-term care facilities feel strongly that the devices could eliminate elder abuse by nursing home employees, and document poor care and neglect.

Join AARP’s efforts at R.I. Statehouse

With the General Assembly in full swing, AARP staff and volunteers are a regular presence at the Statehouse, armed with a list of legislative priorities. Many of the bills are specific to people age 50 and older, but several could benefit everyone in the state. We have circulated a 2013 legislative agenda that is also posted on our Web site – www.aarp.org/ri -- and regularly updated.
