We recently presented training for the staff and volunteers at the Alliance for Better Long-Term Living on how to assist elderly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents (LGBT). It is estimated that as many as 1.5 million to 4 million LGBT individuals are age 60 and older.

Baby boomers urged to back social programs

On the Senior Agenda by William F. Flynn, Jr.

Maggie Kuhn, who founded the Gray Panthers in 1970, is remembered by many as a community organizer and activist. But she was more than that. Home-based caregivers can arrange respites

Home Care by David DiFilippo

Q: I'd like to visit my sister's family for the holidays, but she lives in another state and I'm hesitating because I'm responsible for caring for my 90-year old mother. I've heard about respite care in assisted living facilities, but she won't want to be away from her home.  Other than Christmas Eve and Christmas Day when my brother will be with her, she would have no one to care for her if I weren't around. A friend told me that I might be able to get respite care at home. Is that true? ~ Samantha M., Cranston

Positive attitude helps slow aging process

Fit for Life by Jeanine Achin

I just went to a wedding – my own daughter’s. It was one of those moments in life that emphasizes the passage of time and the rites of passage. I saw people that I hadn’t seen in several years. Some looked and acted as though time had stood still while others hadn’t faired very well in terms of weathering the aging process. The experience made me think more about what makes the difference between the people you see who appear ageless and those who resemble centenarians when they are barely over 50. So I did some research on the topic.
