Pension reform bill falls short of mark

    It is time to set the record straight on AARP’s role in Rhode Island’s pension reform debate. As stated before the House and Senate Finance committees, protecting the rights of older Americans is at the very center of AARP’s mission.  Opposing cuts in retirement benefits to existing retirees is entirely consistent with national AARP policy.

Don’t let the Grinch ruin your holidays

    In the classic Dr. Seuss book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” the green mean Mr. Grinch was on a mission to deny the people of Whoville Christmas by stealing all the presents, decorations and food for the holiday. How could anyone want to steal Christmas? As Dr. Seuss writes, “The most likely reason of all may have been that his heart was two sizes too small.”

Time is a valuable gift that fits one and all

   For most of us, the holidays are times of family and cultural traditions. Each year many look forward to the familiarity of celebrated pastimes such as decorating the Christmas tree or ringing in the New Year. The rituals we become accustomed to become part of who we are. For those living in nursing homes, those traditions are no less important. A big part of what helps an environment feel more like home is not just what it looks like, but what goes on there, and never more so than during the holidays.

It’s wise to check for risk of diabetes

    November was National Diabetes Awareness Month, making this a great time to understand the risk factors for diabetes and discover some steps to take to prevent the disease. Factors that could put a person at risk for Type 2 diabetes include family history, age, weight and activity level. With that in mind and with some traditionally heavy eating coming up through the holidays, now is a good time to evaluate your risk by taking this simple quiz.
