It seems that every client that has come to our office for estate planning services has made it clear that he or she wants to avoid probate. That is perfectly understandable because probate cases can result in a substantial loss of money and delay of time for completing of estate matters.

Older women face many challenges

Women live on average 2.7 years longer than men -- 84.9 years versus 82.2 years. However, those “bonus years” can be a very mixed blessing for many women. A recent report, “Older Women in Rhode Island: A Portrait, authored by Senior Agenda Coalition long-term care consultant Maureen Maigret, points out those women are more likely to be living alone and in need of long-term care. In addition, two-thirds of older caregivers are women who are caring for older parents, spouses or grandchildren.

My wife and I do several estate or downsizing house calls per week and while each call is unique, one thing remains remarkably consistent: Almost without fail in preparation for our visit, virtually everyone covers their dining room table with dozens of pieces of unwanted glassware.

Employ caution when spreading good cheer

Now that Christmas is almost here, I want to remind everyone who has loved ones in a long-term care facility to consider what you bring to them to celebrate the season. It is fully understandable that if loved ones cannot come home to be with family that you want their rooms to be as festive as possible.
