Make fire prevention top safety priority

Did you know that people over the age of 65 face the greatest risk of dying in a fire? When you consider that more than 1,000 people older than 65 die in home fires each year and that more than 2,000 individuals in that age category are injured in fires every year, it should give you pause to think. It does me. Yet, it is comforting to know that there are special precautions we can take to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our homes from fire danger.

Reducing readmissions will save Medicare billions

In Rhode Island, more than one in four Medicare patients discharged from the hospital return within 30 days. Those hospital readmissions are not only a physical and emotional strain on patients, but they are also a costly strain on taxpayers here and elsewhere.  Nationally, hospital readmissions cost Medicare more than $17 billion in 2010. The Medicare program and its participating health care providers are working together to identify the causes of those readmissions and to eliminate the ones that are preventable.
