Loss of home is not forgone conclusion

I was recently discussing the Medicaid application process with certain nursing home officials who help their patients apply for state aid. I commented on how frequently we find people who sincerely believe that as part of the application process, the state is given a lien on their home.  The nursing home officials, looking very surprised, said “Well isn’t that true?” The answer is very simple: No, the state does not get a lien on your home simply because you have applied for or are on Medicaid assistance for payment of nursing home expenses.

Late leaders praised for lasting legacies

The field of aging in Rhode Island recently lost three of its greats: the Rev. E. Naomi Craig, Director Anna Tucker and Sen. June Gibbs. They were extraordinary women and exceptional leaders on elderly issues, who themselves lived to be 94, 92 and 89, respectively. Their lives inspire me daily in my work and in my vision of what growing old should be.

Effort to cut hospital stays compromising patient care

A few months ago I wrote about some exorbitant Medicare Advantage Plan co-payments that often took people by surprise. In the worst case, the co-payments required by some plans for nursing home care were enough to keep subscribers from getting the health care they needed. At a minimum, they created substantial financial hardships for patients and their families.
