Check values before tossing away trinkets

Today's Antiques by Scott Davis

As a long time antiques dealer and estate liquidator, I’ve had the unique, if not humbling privilege, to dig through the very personal affects of many people both alive and deceased. Having done it so many times, I’ve come to see how similar folks tend to be in their personal lives despite how different they can seem outwardly. Regardless of how poor or rich, simple or educated, homely or beautiful people are, most folks tend to choose the same drawer for their socks and keep the same things in their nightstand. The same holds true for many other habits, but none seems to be as consistent as the presence and contents of virtually every gentleman’s trinket box or drawer.

AARP survey shows Rhode Islanders care

On the Inside by Kathleen S. Connell

We seniors were born decades before the “Information Age,” but it certainly is the era in which we now live. The abundance of and access to vast amounts of information is generally a good thing. But we all recognize the downside is that we’re bombarded by relentless media messages day in and day out.

Officials must deter financial exploitation

By Kathleen Heren

An article by Tracey Brenton in the May 15 “Sunday Providence Journal” detailed how an elderly woman from Warwick left quite a large sum of money and property to her caregiver. The woman had never married, but did have four brothers who, according to the article, she disliked intently as well as their children. The woman appeared to have been quite cantankerous her entire life and her philosophy was very simple: My way or the highway. The only problem with an attitude like that is there will come a time in our lives when no matter what; our health will fail, causing us to become dependent on others.

Voters say no to decreasing Medicaid

By Joan M. Woods

A recent survey indicates that Medicaid funding cuts to nursing home care are very unpopular among Rhode Island voters. Eighty-two percent of voters disapprove of cutting Medicaid for those in long-term care facilities and nursing homes. More than nine in 10 voters think it is important for the governor and state legislature to protect Medicaid funding. The state’s proposed fiscal 2012 budget, however, includes cuts of nearly $13 million to nursing home care.

Embrace your inner Mrs. Kravitz

AG's Corner by Peter F. Kilmartin

You may not be familiar with the names Alice Pearce or Sandra Gould, but I am sure you remember Gladys Kravitz.  As the nosy neighbor on the television series “Be-witched,” Mrs. Kravitz was always causing trouble for Samantha Stephens by peeking into the windows to see what magic Samantha was brewing.  It wasn’t long before the name Gladys Kravitz entered our lexicon as a synonym for “nosy neighbor.”
