It’s hard to believe that we’re already in November, with the holiday season fast approaching. Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and the December holidays will be here before we know it. While enjoying all of your yearly traditions with family and friends, consider extending your celebrations by volunteering in your local community.  Service is a great way to celebrate what you have to be thankful for and to help others.

Plan visit to house “we the people” built

As the hotly contested election season comes to an end and victors and losers prepare to settle or vacate new or old digs, a visit to Rhode Island’s seat of state government might be a timely and educational venture. The Rhode Island Statehouse is the people’s house; it belongs to all Rhode Islanders. Hey, you paid for it, furnished it and perhaps invited in some of its tenants; why not pay a visit yourself?

State’s position about property might change

Amongst the few attorneys in Rhode Island who concentrate on helping citizens deal with the complexities of Medicaid rules in connection with assistance for the cost of nursing home expenses, there has been a fair amount of discussion about a possible change in the state’s approach toward a person’s most important asset. While many of the pros and cons are quite technical, I will try to provide a brief overview of the arguments.

Baseless liability suits hit consumers’ wallets

Frivolous lawsuits and outlandish jury awards add significant cost to the health care delivery system. While no one objects to fair compensation in the event of a legitimate liability claim, our court system unfortunately does a poor job in weeding out claims that have no legal merit – at least not before a health care provider has spent thousands of dollars on its defense.
