From the Publisher - And the beat goes on

February’s Salute to Seniors honor went to Frank Terranova, the star of NBC 10 News’ Cooking with Class segment. In addition to taping the television spots and doing a good amount of consulting, Terranova is a senior instructor in Johnson & Wales’ College of Culinary Arts in Providence.

The 68-year-old Terranova says he doesn’t baby his students because he wants to prepare them as much as possible for the work world. He spices up his classes with some stern instructions and warranted criticisms, which the aspiring chefs I observed welcomed and took in stride. It appeared they realized that Chef Terranova has their best interests at heart.

February is American Heart Health Month, which is a reminder that all of us should be doing everything we can to keep that organ in the best possible shape. Visit your doctor, eat right and try to get plenty of exercise. Also, don’t forget your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day. You can send that special person a musical greeting delivered by the Generations Barbershop Quartet. Details are in our story about the group.

The February issue contains several other interesting stories, informative columns and a calendar of events at some of the senior centers throughout Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts.

Enjoy. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your time and interest.

Invite politicians to community meetings

On the Senior AGenda by William F. Flynn, Jr.

Recently, I had the privilege of participating in a meeting with about 15 seniors from the Newport area. Slightly more than half of the folks around the table were residents of Donovan Manor, a senior high-rise where we met. The remainder came from around the city. We shared our stories about aging in the community -- what worked well and what didn’t. It was a terrific session, and I believe we all learned a lot.

Bakelite and Lucite are valuable plastics

Today's Antiques by Scott Davis

Most folks equate plastic with being cheap or imitation, but plastic technology has improved our lives in ways too many to list. Plastics can be formed into virtually any shape, and they can be sterile, optically clear or able to withstand chemicals or tremendous abuse, depending on their formulation. More importantly for collectors, they can be beautiful as well.

Initiative could improve dementia patients’ care

By Kathleen Heren

Healthcentric Advisors, Rhode Island’s quality improvement organization is always involved in projects that are focused on the improvement of life for nursing home residents. Such initiatives have included ways to prevent bed sores and safe transitions. The group is involved in improving dementia care services for nursing home residents. I requested that Healthcentric Advisors write an explanation of that venture so families of long-term care residents and long-term care providers better understand the importance of the initiative.
