Fall migration can often be the most difficult time of year to be a bird watcher. While there are often large numbers of songbirds traveling through the area on their southbound migration, many of them are in drab plumage that makes them challenging to identify. In addition, the birds are not typically singing during this season, so even finding the birds can be a formidable undertaking.

Standing on a favorite rocky outcropping along the shore on a clear fall day is one of my favorite ways of watching birds. It’s usually easy to pick out a few varieties of ducks, diving between the swells, and gulls are abundant, though I seldom spend much time watching them despite their acrobatic aerial displays.
