Disney establishes Hawaiian resort

Senior Travel Talk by Moe Rondeau

If you’re a Disney fan, there’s a new vacation experience awaiting you in Hawaii. Aulani is Disney’s first resort in the gorgeous Hawaiian Islands. The resort is located at the Ko Olina complex on the leeward (drier) side of the island of Oahu, less than 20 miles from the Honolulu International Airport.

Don’t expect a theme-park atmosphere here. If you’ve been to Disney’s resorts in Hilton Head, S.C., or Vero Beach, Fla., you have an idea of what to expect at Aulani. The new resort, however, is uniquely infused with Hawaiian art and culture.
`Aulani is situated on a beautiful lagoon with a sandy beach. The peaceful water is perfect for kids (and adults) of all ages, and lifeguards keep a watchful eye on swimmers. Beach chairs are complimentary, and um-brellas, kayaks, snorkel sets and paddleboards are available for rent.
Just off the beach you’ll find the true center of the resort: Waikolohe Valley, which has an abundance of activities. There’s an 8,200 square foot zero-entry pool, a lazy river, a tubing adventure down a not-so-lazy river and a private lagoon made for snorkeling. Menehune Bridge is an interactive play area that fascinates younger children while older kids and parents can enjoy four whirlpool spas with sunset views.
The resort offers a wide variety of activities specifically designed for a variety of age groups, infants and toddlers, kids, tweens, teens and adults. For example, Aunty’s Beach House is kids club where younger guests can play, learn about Hawaiian culture through art and music and meet some of their favorite Disney characters, all of whom are supposedly on vacation themselves. Adults will want to take advantage of the wonderful Laniwai Spa, which includes an outdoor hydrotherapy garden.
Accommodations include well-equipped resort rooms for up to four guests and suites for up to six. Villas offer a bit more privacy, more amenities and accommodations for up to four, five, nine or 12 guests. Dining options include everything from quick-service sandwiches and snacks to fine dining featuring classic Hawaiian cuisine.
To experience Disney’s magic in Hawaii, talk with your travel professional about options for your stay at Aulani.
