Alert authorities of suspicions

On Alert by Frank Murga

Throughout history, there have been many threats to and assaults on the security of our nation. That has brought about loss of life, property destruction, illness and injury to many citizens, displacement of large numbers of people and grave economic consequences.

Terrorism is the use of force or violence against persons or property for the purpose of intimidation. Terrorists will try to convince citizens that a standing government is powerless as well as trying to get attention for their cause.
Acts of terrorism include threats, assassination, bomb scares and the use of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons of destruction. Typical high risk targets include military and civilian government facilities, airports, cities and popular landmarks.
Terrorists may target large public gatherings, water and food supplies and utilities. Terrorist also spread fear by sending explosives or chemical agents through the mail.
People in the immediate area of a terrorist attack, can rely on police, fire and other officials for guidance. People can prepare for a terrorist attack using the same measures that I have recommended to be ready for a natural disaster. Here are a few guidelines:
    • Be aware of your surroundings
    • Take precautions when traveling.
    • Be aware of unusual behavior and move or leave if you feel uncomfortable or if something does not feel right.
    • Do not accept packages from strangers.
    • Do not leave luggage unattended.
    • When entering a structure, learn where the emergency exits are and plan how to exit the building.
    • Be prepared to do without services that you normally rely on.
    • Most importantly, re-port your suspicions to police or security personnel.
    For readers who took the quiz in last month’s column, here are the answers: 1, a; 2, b; 3. b; 4, b; and 5. a.
Until next time: be prepared and be informed.
