Hurricane stirs up dishonest schemes

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a consumer alert about possible scams taking place in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
Following major disasters, it’s common for scam artists to impersonate charities to get money or private information from well-intentioned taxpayers. Such fraudulent schemes may involve contact by telephone, social media, e-mail or in-person solicitations.

Expenses can cut Uncle Sam's bill

If you are able to itemize deductions on your tax return instead of claiming the standard deduction, you may be able to claim certain miscellaneous expenses. A tax deduction reduces the amount of your taxable income and generally reduces the amount of taxes you have to pay.
