Bicyclist rides to honor grandmother

Living with Alzheimer's by Camilla Farrell

When most recent college graduates may be preparing for their next job interview or planning their next party, Daniel Horne of Newport is taking the “road less traveled.”
Horne graduated from Providence College this past spring with a degree in psychology. Instead of looking for employment in a weak job market, Horne decided to do something life changing on his own. He is biking from Virginia to California on a selfless quest to raise awareness and funds for people with Alzheimer’s disease in honor of his grandmother, who died recently from the disease, and perhaps discover a little bit about himself in the process.
I had the pleasure of meeting Daniel and his parents, Nancy and Fred Horne, at a recent fund-raiser hosted by the Village House Nursing Home at Cappy’s in Newport. The Hornes said they are proud of our son and a little nervous, too.
Daniel plans to ride his bike about 60 miles per day and stay with friends and family along the way, so if all goes well, the trip should take about two and one-half months.
Everyone at the Alzheimer’s Association Rhode Island Chapter wishes Daniel much success in his altruistic pursuit to help raise money for people with Alzheimer’s disease. If you would like to help Daniel on his quest to raise funds, go to his Web site, www.kintera.org/dinnerparty/beaboutit, and make a contribution.
Thanks to the staff at the Village House, where Daniel’s grandmother resided, for its pledge for each mile of Daniels ride. When I asked Daniel about his grandmother before she passed away, his eyes sparkled and he said, “I am not sure my grandmother remembers me anymore, but she smiles and seems happy I am there.”
Keep our thoughts with you Daniel for a safe journey. We can’t wait to read your blogs along the way. Safe travels, and see you in December.
