Veteran salutes Honor Flight

 Letter to the Editor

An honor flight to Washington, D.C., of World War II veterans from New England occurred in October. The flight was organized for the purpose of recognizing the important contributions New England military veterans made to help bring ultimate victory to the United States and its allies and to afford the veterans an opportunity to visit the recently completed World War II memorial and the other war memorials located in our nations’ capital.
Seven World War II veterans were numbered among the honor flight group that assembled on Oct, 24 at 1:45 a.m. at the Veterans Administration Center in Bedford, Mass., At 5:45 a.m., the group was bused to Logan Air-port in Boston, where it boarded a Southwest 737 plane and departed via Baltimore for its destination.
I am a veteran of the Army Air Corps, and I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to make the trip. Other Rhode Island veterans who went were: Ralph Charney of Wakefield, Army; Raymond E. Conca of North Providence, Navy; Fred Velletre of Johnston, Navy; Louis A. DiLorenzo of Providence, Navy; Henry Stad of East Providence, Army Air Corps; and Anthony Paris of East Providence, Army.
Honor Flight of New England, which is based in Hooksett, N.H., paid all of the expenses for the veterans, including the costs for the flight, meals and incidentals. The one-day trip was arranged by Joseph Byron, founder and administrator of Honor Flight, and Sheila Peters, administrative assistant for the organization.
The veterans salute you and Honor Flight of New England.
