Home-based caregivers can arrange respites

Home Care by David DiFilippo

Q: I'd like to visit my sister's family for the holidays, but she lives in another state and I'm hesitating because I'm responsible for caring for my 90-year old mother. I've heard about respite care in assisted living facilities, but she won't want to be away from her home.  Other than Christmas Eve and Christmas Day when my brother will be with her, she would have no one to care for her if I weren't around. A friend told me that I might be able to get respite care at home. Is that true? ~ Samantha M., Cranston
A: Yes, respite (short-term) care is available through most home care and companion care agencies. A caregiver would stay with her 24/7 to insure that her needs are met. It's a good idea to hire the caregiver intermittently before your trip to make sure you and your mother are comfortable with the individual. Look for a company that is bonded and insured, with good references.
Q: Is the rate for live-in companion care generally the same as for visiting services? ~ Phoebe S., Warwick
A: That depends on the company. Many companies offer a discounted rate for 24/7 services. Be sure to ask what discounts are in place for extended care giving time when choosing a companion care company.
Q: Do home care agencies provide care in assisted living facilities? ~ Gwen K., Johnston
A: Yes, some assisted living residents have health care needs beyond what is provided by the assisted living facility. Home health care agencies provide skilled nursing and rehabilitation services at home -- even if home is an assisted living facility. Companion care can also be provided if an assisted living resident just needs someone to run errands or help with basic daily tasks.
