DEA's goals unchanged

    During this year’s session of the Rhode Island General Assembly, legislation was passed that directed that the Department of Elderly Affairs (DEA) become a division within the Department of Human Services (DHS). Although that is a significant change, the work and the mission of the DEA remain the same: “To preserve the independence, dignity, and capacity for choice for seniors, adults with disabilities, families and caregivers.”


Director urges older Americans to speak up

   Congress took an historic step forward in recognizing the challenges of growing older in the United States when it passed the Older American Act (OAA) in 1965. The historic piece of legislation established support for states to develop programs and services that preserve the independence and dignity of individuals age 60 and older. The act also established the Administration on Aging to oversee those efforts.

    Spring is in full bloom, and it’s the perfect temperature outside. We’ve shed our bulky winter gear. The roads and sidewalks are clear. It’s the easiest and most pleasant time of year to get outside and go places – run routine errands, visit friends or take a special trip to Roger Williams Park or Colt State Park to enjoy the sunshine and the flowering trees.

DEA coordinates services aimed at eliminating isolation

    According to the 2010 Profile of Older Americans published by the Administration on Aging, 30 percent of seniors live alone. As age increases, so does the percentage of seniors who live alone until it reaches a high of 49 percent for women 75 and older.
