Recently, the Rhode Island Office of Attorney General was included in an article in “Consumer Reports” magazine on the very important issue of elderly financial crime. The article explored the many ways seniors may be financially exploited by not just strangers, but by family members, too.

In the good old days, we’d see our insurance agents at Little League games or at parent-teacher nights. They were friends and neighbors, and we could drop in on them or call them directly with any questions or concerns, making it easy to get our benefits when the time came.

Funeral director’s conviction raises red flag

When a loved one dies, grieving family members and friends often are confronted with dozens of decisions about the funeral that must be made quickly and often under great emotional stress. That is something I experienced firsthand last year with the passing of my beloved 88-year-old mother, Dot.

Under a Medicaid global waiver, Rhode Island received permission from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid to offer senior citizens more options. One goal was to allow them to stay in their own homes longer and stay out of an institutional setting.
